2021/2022 Snow and Ice Event Response

03.10.22 | 1:30 p.m.
Snow Update.  Predicted snow has arrived.  Crews will respond as needed.  Although teams were able to brine Posted Snow Routes in advance of snow, conditions could get slick until the snow ends around dinner time.  Around ½” is expected.  Stay alert for changing road conditions.

03.07.22 | 5:30 a.m.
Crews were called in around midnight to begin responding to arriving snow. Most of what is falling is melting. However, slick spots are developing here and there. Crews have salted Posted Snow Routes and are monitoring conditions. There is potential we will receive up to an additional inch of snow before 10 a.m. today, Monday, March 7. Take it slow during the morning commute.

03.06.22 | 11:30 a.m.
Winter is not giving up yet! Did you know our last snowfall for the season in the previous three years came on March 15, March 16, and April 17? So be prepared.  Up to two inches of snow is expected to arrive later this evening, Sunday, March 6, and last through Monday morning.  Crews will respond as needed.  Prepare for slick conditions overnight into the morning commute.

02.25.22 | 1:45 p.m.

Crews finished making a pass on all residential roads. With rising temps and melting to follow on Saturday, no further response will be provided for this event.

02.25.22 | 5:45 a.m.

Snow started picking up late last night, laying nearly 2” total before the snow ended early this morning. Crews have finished clearing Posted Snow Routes and started clearing residential roads. Residential roads should be complete late this afternoon.
Slick spots aren’t out of the question, especially on those residential roads. Take it slow.

02.24.22 | 7:15 a.m.

Our partners at the National Weather Service are predicting the area will receive up to 2.5” of snow beginning around the noon hour and ending around midnight. Crews will respond as needed once the snow arrives. In the meantime, prepare ahead and allow more time during the afternoon commute. Conditions could be slick when folks begin leaving work and school.

02.19.22 | 5:30 a.m.

Crews were called in overnight to clear and salt Posted Snow Routes. Freezing temps prevented immediate melting but will improve as the morning sun arrives and temps improve. Watch for slick roads and bridge decks this morning. Take it slow, and be prepared for sudden loss of traction if you hit black ice.

02.18.22 | 8:45 p.m.

The National Weather Service has issued a snow squall warning, currently set to expire at 9:15 p.m. According to the warning “Consider avoiding or delaying travel until the snow squall passes your location. If you must travel, use extra caution and allow extra time. Rapid changes in visibility and slick road conditions may lead to accidents.”

“Wet roadways will quickly freeze. Black ice will cause roads, bridges and overpasses to become slick and dangerous. Slow down and be prepared for sudden loss of traction.”

#Davenport teams are prepared to respond as needed.  Please travel with caution overnight.

02.17.22 | 5:00 a.m.

Light precipitation combined with freezing temps has resulted in a few slick spots this morning. Crews have been called in to treat Posted Snow Routes and hills. Slow down if you are out early this morning. A slight chance the area will receive up to a ½” of snow remains in the forecast for today.

02.13.22 | 7:15 a.m.

Public Works crews were called in to address a light layer of snow that fell earlier this morning. The team is making a pass on all Posted Snow Routes and hills. No further response will be provided.  Drive according to conditions.

02.02.22 | 6:00 a.m.

Drive according to conditions this morning; roads could be slick. A light band of snow began covering roads earlier this morning. Crews have been called in to clear Posted Snow Routes. Residential clearing will not occur due to the low volume of snow. Snow is expected to end shortly.

02.01.22 | 4:00 p.m.

Chances for snow appear slim. If snow should arrive Wednesday, Public Works will respond as/if needed.

01.31.22 | 3:30 p[.m.

Our snow team was out brining Posted Snow Routes today and will be out again tomorrow in preparation for snow that could arrive as early as late Tuesday night. With no rain expected before the snow, this is a perfect opportunity to take advantage of the brine application in prep. Watch for updates as the forecast becomes more precise.

01.24.22 | 6:00 a.m.

Earlier this morning, public works crews were called in to begin clearing Posted Snow Routes. Snow is expected to end in the next hour or so. Expect slick conditions for the morning commute. Slow down and increase your following distance. Response to this event will end when Posted Snow Routes are clear to the curb. Residential roads will not be cleared for this low snow volume event.

01.21.22 | 3:00 p.m.

According to our partners at the National Weather Service there is a slight chance for flurries early Saturday morning, and healthier chance for up to 1.5 inches of snow between midnight and 6 a.m., Sunday, January 23.  Crews are prepared and will respond as needed.

01.16.22 | 6:00 a.m.

Our snow team finished clearing residential roads late last night. There is a chance for a light dusting later this evening, Sunday, January 16. Crews will respond if needed. If you believe your road was missed, please report it at www.davenportiowa.com/pwrs. The team will return on Tuesday to spot-check and clear streets as needed.

01.15.22 | 6:00 a.m.

Please keep cars parked off-street today so crews can clear Posted Snow Routes and residential roads quickly, safely, and efficiently. The snow team should finish clearing Posted Snow Routes by lunch and begin entering residential areas after that. Roads will be slick until clearing is complete. Drive according to conditions. Remember to clear sidewalks to help keep those deliveries coming to your door, dogs being walked, and kids making it to school safely.

01.14.22 | 1:00 p.m.

A few reminders as snow begins to arrive:

A Snow Emergency is in effect from 2 p.m., Friday, January 14 through 2 p.m., Saturday, January 15. Vehicles parked on Posted Snow Routes during the Snow Emergency are subject to ticket and tow. Downtown ramp parking is free 2 p.m., Friday, January 14 through 8 a.m., Sunday, June 16.

Crews will focus all effort on clearing Posted Snow routes until snow ends, and routes are cleared to the curb before plowing residential roads.

Slow down and increase your following distance. It is likely to be slick through Saturday morning.

01.14.22 | 7:00 a.m.

Our partners at the National Weather Service tell us there is a good chance the area will see 4” of snow beginning around the lunch hour and lasting through early Saturday morning, January 15. Due to predicted snowfall and snowfall rate, a Snow Emergency has been declared effective 2 p.m. today, Friday, January 14 through 2 p.m. Saturday, January 15. Vehicles parked on Posted Snow Routes during the Snow Emergency may be ticketed and towed. Park for free in the City’s Downtown ramps from 2 p.m., Friday, January 14 through 8 a.m., Sunday, January 16 to avoid a ticket and tow.  Text, phone and email alerts will not be sent until 8 a.m.

01.09.22 | 6:00 a.m.

Slick roads developed overnight due to freezing rain and drizzle. Crews were called in at 9:30 p.m. last night and should finish making a pass with salt on all Posted Snow Routes and residential roads by 7:00 a.m. Spotty refreezing is possible on all streets through Monday due to sub-zero temperatures. Sun today should help melting. Please do not drive as you would under normal weather conditions. Go slow and drive with caution.

01.07.22 | 4:00 p.m.

Our partners at the National Weather Service have declared a Winter Weather Advisory for potential freezing rain and glazing between Noon and 6 p.m., Saturday, January 8. Public Works crews are on alert and prepared to respond as needed.  Please use this information to prepare for possible travel hazards Saturday afternoon into the evening.

01.05.22 | 7:00 a.m.

Blowing and Drifting Snow 01.05.22, 7:00 a.m. | Strong winds have caused blowing and drifting on roads. Crews will be out today spot treating and clearing as needed. Temperatures with wind chill will range between -10 to -20 through Friday.  Remember to dress in layers when going out and limit time outside. 01.04.22 | 6:30 a.m.
Public Works snow team finished Downtown and Hilltop Campus Village snow removal and hauling earlier this morning.  Response to this event is complete.

01.03.22 | 9:00 a.m.

With nearly five inches of snow on New Year’s Day, it is necessary to declare a 2nd Snow Emergency specific to Downtown Davenport and the Hilltop Village Campus for snow removal and hauling from the curb/parking lanes due to building density. The 2nd Snow Emergency will go into effect at 9:00 p.m., Monday, January 3 and expire at 6:00 a.m., Tuesday, January 4.  Residents and visitors to Downtown Davenport may park in the City’s ramps for free from 5:00 p.m. today, through 8:00 a.m., January 4.  Vehicles parked on Posted Snow Routes in this area during the Snow Emergency will be ticketed and may be towed.  For details on the area impacted by this snow emergency visit www.davenportiowa.com/winter and use the Posted Snow Routes link.

01.02.22 | 6:00 p.m.

Despite frigid temps, the sun came out and helped tremendously with melting today. The snow team will make it through all residential roads in a few hours before heading in for the day. Crews will return Monday to spot check and clear streets as needed. Watch for details on a probable 2nd Snow Emergency specific to Downtown snow removal and hauling tomorrow morning.

01.02.22 | 8:30 a.m.

Subzero temperatures can be hazardous, protect you and your home. Bundle up when going out, keep pets safe, and prevent frozen pipes. Here are a few tips for staying safe.

  • Keep cabinet doors open and the faucet dripping to help prevent frozen pipes.
  • Never leave space heaters unattended and keep them at least three feet away from any combustibles such as wallpaper, bedding, draperies, clothing, and furniture.
  • Limit time outdoors for you are your pets. Dress in layers.

01.02.22 | 6:00 a.m.

Crews should finish clearing all Posted Snow Routes by mid-morning and have started clearing some residential roads. Keep cars off of Posted Snow Routes until noon today to avoid a ticket and tow, and residential roads all day to avoid being plowed in. Bare pavement may not be achieved today as salt will be ineffective at these subzero temperatures. Salt will, however, be applied to promote melting when temperatures improve. Remember to drive with caution and bundle up if you plan to go out.

01.01.22 | 6:00 p.m.

One+/- inches of snow remain possible before 10 p.m. tonight. Blowing and drifting may create additional issues overnight. Crews will continue plowing and salting Posted Snow Routes until clear to the curb before entering residential roads. Look for the transition to residential streets between breakfast and lunch Sunday, January 2. Keep cars off of Posted Snow Routes to avoid a ticket and tow, and residential roads to avoid being plowed in. Be aware subzero temps overnight and into Sunday will challenge Sunday’s plowing effort; bare pavement may not be achieved as salt will be ineffective.

01.01.22 | 3:00 p.m.

Temperatures are going to dive below zero overnight into Sunday. If you have a sidewalk or driveway, consider shoveling as much as possible today. In particular, if you have a driveway, consider creating a pocket for snow to go (facing the street) on the left side of the driveway and placing material removed from the driveway on the right side (facing the street). Crews attempt to minimize windrowing whenever conditions allow them to do so, but windrow is often unavoidable because the snow has to go somewhere. Taking this proactive measure can help further reduce the volume pushed into the approach. To view an example, visit www.davenportiowa.com/winter and use the driveway tab.

01.01.22 | 8:30 a.m.
Our Snow Team has been called in to begin response to arriving snow.

A Snow Emergency is in effect through Noon, Sunday, January 2. Staff will be out ticketing and towing vehicles parked on Posted Snow Routes when snow arrives. If you are visiting the Downtown, park in the City’s ramps for free through 8 a.m., Monday, January 3.

Snowfall rates will be heaviest between 11 a.m. and 8 p.m. today, January 1. Blowing and drifting will also contribute to poor driving conditions. If you must go out, take it slow and increase your following distance.

With subzero temperatures expected overnight into Sunday, we encourage everyone to get out and shovel when you are able today.

12.31.21 | 6:00 p.m.
Reminder - up to 6+ inches of snow is expected beginning around 6 a.m., Saturday, January 1. A Snow Emergency starts at 6 a.m. on January 1. Start the New Year off on the right foot, park off-street to avoid a ticket and tow on Posted Snow Routes, and on residential roads to avoid being plowed in and help our snow team clear roads. If you are celebrating or live Downtown, you can park for free in the City’s ramps from 4 p.m., Friday, December 31 through 8 a.m., Monday, January 3.

12.31.21 | 11:30 a.m.

Our friends at the National Weather Service tell us up to 6+ inches of snow is possible beginning around 6 a.m., Saturday, January 1, and lasting through the evening.  Due to the volume of snow and associated hazards, a Snow Emergency has been declared effective 6 a.m., Saturday, January 1 through Noon, Sunday, January 2. Prepare tonight by parking off-street, or set your alarm. Crews will begin ticketing vehicles parked on Posted Snow Routes when the snow starts to fly. Visitors to the Downtown may park for free in the City’s ramps from 4 p.m., Friday, December 31 through 8 a.m., Monday, January 3.

Please be aware this event will have significant travel impacts and be immediately followed by a drop in temperatures to -15 to -25 below zero overnight Saturday into Sunday. This combination will make it challenging to achieve bare pavement on residential roads as salt will be ineffective.

As always, crews will focus on clearing Posted Snow Routes until the snow ends before clearing residential streets.

Please move vehicles from the street and drive according to weather conditions.

Stay Safe Davenport.

12.29.21 | 7:00 a.m.

The Public Works snow team has finished clearing all roads. Staff will be spot-checking and clearing slick spots throughout the day. Pay attention to road conditions and drive accordingly. There are some slippery patches out there.

12.28.21 | 5:45 p.m.
Crews are clearing both residential roads and Posted Snow Routes at this time.  Response to this event should conclude sometime overnight into early Wednesday.

Please park off-street when you can to avoid being plowed in and help snow teams efficiently clear roads.

12.28.21 | 1: 15 p.m.
Public Works crews began responding to snow earlier this morning. Teams will continue plowing and salting Posted Snow Routes until clear to the curb before clearing residential roads later this evening.

Park off-street on Posted Snow Routes and residential roads through the overnight to avoid being plowed in and help operators clear roads as safely and quickly as possible.

Drive according to conditions, and take breaks when shoveling. This is a wet, heavy snow.

12.28.21 | 9 a.m.
Public Works crews have begun plowing and salting Posted Snow Routes.

12.28.21 | 7 a.m.
Our partners US National Weather Service Quad Cities Iowa/Illinois have issued a Winter Weather Advisory through 6 P.M. today, Tuesday, December 28.  ️Around two inches of snow is expected, followed by rain.  #Davenport Public Works crews are ready to respond as needed. Slick travel conditions are possible. Remember to increase your following distance and drive according to conditions.

10.12.21 | 9:00 a.m.

With winter weather just around the corner, Davenport is making preparations for winter weather response.  Plow blades and spreaders are being installed, training conducted, and our salt supply has been replenished.

As part of winter preparation, the City encourages all residents and visitors to be prepared. This includes signing up for Snow Emergency Alerts. Signing up for alerts is the most reliable way to know when a Snow Emergency has been declared and when parking on posted snow routes is prohibited.

Snow emergencies are declared when the area is expected to receive ice and/or hazardous volumes of snow. Parking is prohibited on Posted Snow Routes when a snow emergency is declared to help Public Works crews ensure the highest traffic volume roads and hills receive priority service, which helps everyone get around when the snow starts to fly.

To subscribe, visit www.davenportiowa.com/alertiowa.  We will be conducting a test of the snow emergency alert system on Wednesday, October 20, to help you stay in the know.
