2019/2020 Snow and Ice Event Response

Fri Apr 17 - 5:45 AM

A small Public Works team has been called in to spot treat bridge decks, hills and slick spots across Davenport. Slick spots are possible through the early morning hours. Take it slow.

Thu Apr 16 - 1:00 PM

We are in for another interesting night this week. Our friends at the National Weather Service tell us we may see around five inches of snowfall between 8 PM Thu Apr 16 and 6 AM Fri Apr 17. Snow could be heavy at times and travel conditions slushy and slick overnight.

Crews will be dispatched for snow removal on Posted Snow Routes as needed. If you don’t have to go out overnight, please stay home.

Please park off-street on Posted Snow Routes so plows can clear curb-to-curb. If plows cannot clear to the curb, localized water ponding is possible due to rapid melting. Consider clearing your catch basin of snow to help melting snow drain from the street.

Fri Feb 13 - 1:00 PM

Rain, snow and slushy conditions are possible Sat Mar 14. Just remember to drive according to conditions, short-term slushy roads are possible.

Public Works crews will respond if needed.

Fri Feb 28 - 10:30 AM

Response to event concluded.

Fri Feb 28 - 6:30 AM

Light snow coming down will impact your morning commute Fri Feb 28.  Take it slow.  Slick spots are possible.

Public Works’ crews have been called in and are spot treating roads at this time.

Tue Feb 25 - 7:00 AM

Snow is not expected.

Mon Feb 24 - 4:00 PM

Early reports of significant snow have been revised down to one to two inches of snow starting Tue Feb 25 into Wed morning.

A snow emergency will not be declared unless the forecast changes to higher amounts; however, we encourage everyone to park off-street when they are able. Parking off-street helps crews clear roads more efficiently and safely, and helps you avoid being plowed in.  Remember, crews will clear posted snow routes before residential streets.  This helps to ensure travel throughout the city.

Remember to take it slow on ice and snow.

Thu Feb 13 - 3:00 PM

Crews finished clearing Posted Snow Routes and making a pass on residential roads.

Thu Feb 13 - 6:00 AM

Roads are slick!  Snow came down quickly early this morning and should end by 7 am Thu Feb 13.  Temperatures will only drop from here, reaching -15 degrees by 10 am.  Give yourself a little extra time for the morning commute and dress in layers.

Crews are clearing Posted Snow Routes at this time.  In between periods of snow last night, teams did make a pass with salt on residential hills and some roads before returning to Posted Snow Routes.

Crews will make a pass on residential roads with salt after Posted Snow Routes are clear later this morning. Plowing will not occur on residential streets due to the temperature.  Salt applications on residential roads will promote melting on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday with sun and warmer temperatures in the forecast.  Expect slick road conditions on residential streets until melting can occur this weekend.

Expect sub-zero temperatures through Friday afternoon.  Limit time outdoors.

Wed Feb 12 - 5:00 PM

Don’t trust the road’s appearance. While previously applied brine and pavement temperatures are melting for the most part, spotty glazing/slick spots are developing. Crews are out and will be treating or clearing roads as snow continues and the night progresses.  Take It Slow.

Wed Feb 12 - 6:00 AM

Snowfall totals have been revised down to 1 to 2 inches, enough to cause slick conditions beginning around 3 pm, today, Wed Feb 12. Snow is expected to fall through the overnight hours and be accompanied by brisk winds and falling temperatures.

A snow emergency is not being declared; however we encourage everyone to park off-street when they are able. Parking off-street helps crews clear roads more efficiently and safely, and helps you avoid being plowed in.  Remember, crews will clear posted snow routes before residential roads.  This helps to ensure travel throughout the city.

If you are out and about later Wed and on Thu, give yourself a little extra time and following distance.  Shoveling early and dressing in layers is also encouraged, as temperatures will drop throughout the day Thu.

Tue Feb 11 - 3:30 PM

The current National Weather Service forecast indicates the area will receive around 3 inches of snow beginning around 1pm, tomorrow, Wed Feb 12, and last through Thu morning.  The afternoon commute tomorrow could be slick!

Because of some uncertainty in snowfall totals, the City will wait until the forecast firms up tomorrow morning before deciding on whether to call a Snow Emergency or not.

Remember - a City “snow emergency” is not a weather report or travel advisory. It’s a notice to NOT PARK on posted snow routes. Not only do parked cars present safety hazards but they hinder efficient plowing operations, and even a few inches of snow can trap parked cars. No one wants that.

Stay tuned for more details tomorrow.

Sun Feb 9 - 12:30 PM

Crews have concluded response to this event.

Sun Feb 9 - 10:00 AM

A small crew has been called in to address icing that is occurring on some of our outlying streets exposed to wind and lighter traffic. Teams will respond as needed to arriving conditions.  Light snow/sleet/ice expected to taper off around noon.

Stay safe out there.  Black ice is possible.

Fri Feb 7 - 1:00 PM

The area could receive around ½ to 1 inch of snow Sunday morning according to the National Weather Service forecast.  Crews applied brine today in preparation for the possibility of snow, and will respond as needed based on arriving conditions.

Thu Feb 6 - 8:30 AM
Crews finishes response to this event.

Thu Feb 6 - 5:30 AM

Salt brine applications did a great job of melting much of the snow that fell early this morning.  Crews are spot-checking and treating Posted Snow Routes with snow cover.  Slick spots are possible during the earlier morning commute.

Crews will return to normal operations in an hour or so, after spot treating is complete.

Tue Feb 4 - 2:00 PM

Public Works crews applied brine today, and will finish applying brine tomorrow, to all Posted Snow Routes in preparation for possible snow Wed afternoon into Wed night.  One to three inches of snow is possible.

Crews are prepared to respond when the snow starts to fly.

Fri Jan 24th - 11:00 AM

The current Snow Emergency has been cancelled.  Crews have started clearing residential roads and will likely be clearing those roads through the evening and possibly overnight.

Spotty snow showers remain possible throughout the day today and Sat.  Crews will switch focus to Posted Snow Routes when this occurs, and then return to residential roads.

A 2nd Snow Emergency specific to the Downtown and Hilltop Campus areas will go into effect beginning at 9p Sun Jan 26 through 6a Mon Jan 27.  This 2nd Snow Emergency is specific to this area to allow for removal of accumulated snow in the right-of-way. Residents and visitors to the Downtown may park for free in the city’s ramps through 8a Mon Jan 27.  The text, phone or e-mail alert for this emergency will be issued on Sun Jan 26 at Noon as a reminder.

Please park off-street on residential roads to avoid being plowed in.  Parking off-street also helps crews clear roads more safely and efficiently.

This is a pretty wet snow.  Take frequent breaks, and push instead of lifting snow when shoveling. If you have a neighbor who has been ill, away or who is less able, lend them a hand if you can.

Fri Jan 24th - 6:00 AM

Public Works crews are clearing Posted Snow Routes at this time.  Slick roads are possible through the morning commute.

Yesterday’s forecast has changed.  Snow may taper off this morning and be followed by rain and warm temps and then another minor chance for snow.  Stay tuned for updates later this morning for the status on clearing activities, where our plows will be, as well as the current Snow Emergency.

Expect slick conditions on side streets.

Thu Jan 23rd - 10:00 AM

Due to accumulations, a Downtown pickup of snow and Downtown/Hilltop Campus Snow Emergency is also scheduled to begin Sun Jan 26 at 9p through Mon Jan 27 at 6a.

When not on Posted Snow Routes, crews will be making a pass on residential roads with a plow and salt today. Warming temperatures and salt today should help with melting of current snowpack.

Thu Jan 23rd - 6:00 AM

Crews are clearing Posted Snow Routes. Snow may end temporarily by mid-day before picking back up later this evening, Thu Jan 23. Up to three additional inches of snow is possible through Fri night.

Some melting, prior snowpack, and new snow will keep side streets a little slick in the short-term. Be aware and take it slow.

Park off-street when possible, especially on Posted Snow Routes.  Parking off-street helps crews clear roads more safely and efficiently.

Shovel sidewalks between events to promote pedestrian safety.

Public Works is also monitoring river and creek conditions for rises related to ice flows.  S Concord is closed between River Dr and Utah due to water over the road as a result of river level and ice flow.

Knowing where the water supply shut-off valve is in your home could mean the difference between significant damage and a little damage in the event of long term power outage. Knowing how to thaw pipes properly could also mean the difference between staying safe and tragedy. Never use an open flame or electrical appliances to thaw frozen water pipes.
