Major Behning promotion announcement

(August 4, 2025) The Davenport Police Department is pleased to announce that Captain Greg Behning, a 30-year veteran of the Davenport Police Department, has been promoted to the rank of Major and will serve as the Assistant Chief of Police effective August 3, 2025. Behning succeeds Assistant Chief of Police, Major Jamie Brown, following his retirement on August 1, 2025.

Major Behning is a Davenport native who grew up in a family with a strong tradition in law enforcement. Since joining the Davenport Police Department in 1994, he has served in every division of the department, including all three patrol shifts, the Tactical Operations Bureau (TOB), the Training Unit, and the Neighborhoods Energized to Succeed (NETS) Unit. He has also held the role of Internal Affairs Officer, TOB Commander, and most recently served as the Patrol Division Commander.

Major Behning has been an active contributor to regional law enforcement efforts, including serving with the Quad City Metropolitan Enforcement Group (MEG). He retired, as the Commander, from the Davenport Police Emergency Services Team after serving for 22 years. He has also served overseas as a Tactical Commander Instructor for the U.S. Department of State’s Anti-Terrorism Assistance Program, instructing senior members of national organizations tasked with terrorist incident response.

Throughout his career, Major Behning has received numerous awards and commendations, including the 2012 and 2020 American Legion Post 26 Law Enforcement Officer of the Year Awards. In 2021, he was awarded the Davenport Police Department’s highest award, the Medal of Honor, making him the highest decorated officer in department history.

Major Behning is a graduate of the Northwestern University School of Police Staff & Command. He holds a Management of Personal Protection degree from National American University’s Henley-Putnam School of Strategic Security. Outside of his professional career, Major Behning and his wife have been mentors in the Big Brothers Big Sisters program.

“For Major Behning, serving the Davenport community through the police department has been more than a job - it's been his life's work,” said Chief Jeffery Bladel. “He’s always looked out for the well-being of our residents and our officers. His steady leadership, experience, and dedication at every level of the department will serve him well in this new role.”

Major Behning says he is honored to serve in his new role alongside the men and women of the department.

“I am very excited to continue my service and a family tradition of dedication to the citizens of Davenport in my new role as Assistant Chief,” said Major Behning. “I am also honored and humbled by this opportunity to work alongside Chief Bladel and the dedicated men and women who are the Davenport Police Department as we face the challenges of policing in a complex, modern society.”

The Davenport Police Department congratulates Assistant Chief Greg Behning on his well-earned promotion.
